It started out as a problem in Firefox (didn't happen in any other program or Windows Explorer) - I couldn't type the letters c, v, h or t. The only thing I can imagine that they have in common is that I use ctrl + those letters a lot in Firefox (copy, paste, history, new tab). I could usually fix the problem by restarting the browser.
Now it doesn't work in Windows Explorer (including the start menu search / run) but it works fine in Firefox (and everything else). It's those same letters and switching keyboards or using the on-screen keyboard has the same effect. I've restarted the computer since.
