I've not posted for a while, but I'm back!

I've built a site for someone and they now want to know if I can set them up with an area where they can upload and download files. I don't want to set up a complete CMS, nor do I want them to have FTP access to the root folder of the domain through their FTP client.

Could anyone advise me what would be the best way to proceed? I'm wondering if they could do it through their browser, after logging in, or perhaps setting up a directory, giving them access only to that and asking them to install an FTP client.

Any ideas?
