I purchased (6 identical) Dell XPS420, CD2, E8400 (3.0 GHZ) systems for my computer lab at work. My computer guys partitioned them for dual boot (Vista and RHEL5), but they are stumped when it comes to getting the ATI Radeon HD3870 512MB GDDR4 graphics card working with RHEL5 (works fine on the windows side).
The Dell S2409W 24 inch monitor has resolution 1920x1080, but linux provides 1280x1024 as the max -- and I have programs that don't display properly at this resln. I run graphics intensive programs at work, which is why I got the gaming system, but these programs run slow and choppy -- completely unmangable.
I have an ATI Catalyst Control icon, but clicking it says there is no linux driver. For a previous computer, a driver problem caused similar graphics problems, so I got the linux driver (not 64 bit) for this card off the ATI webpage and ran it. Upon reboot, the computer crashes (nothing on the monitor, can't ssh in -- this computer will have to be redone from the image).
I've also tried (on a second computer) running
aticonfig -- initial, then modifying the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to include the higher resolution by just adding "1920x1080" to Modes, but when I log out I get an error and am switched back to 1280x1024.
Any additional ideas of what I can try would immensely appreciated as I have people breathing down my neck wanting to use these computers and no one here seems able to help me find a solution!! Let me know if you need addn info. Thanks!!
