On Ubuntu, your allowed to alter stuff on your system using 'sudo'. so, if you were edit some file located at /etc/something you should issue the command 'sudo vi /etc/something'

However, if your still determined on switching to root in Ubuntu, try 'sudo su -' and give your current user's password.
