Normally if a file isn't being opened with the proper program you could right click and go through the Open With... process, but even after choosing Winword.exe it still won't show up as a program to even choose as the default program.
Not to be redundant, but the former thread that addressed this problem suggested using CCleaner or editing the registry. Many of the posters reported registry fixes and very complicated methods that fixed the problem. I have used both options for other problems,... but running CCleaner to do a Registry clean solved the problem very quickly - and much safer than working within the registry. This program is a gem and I use it in my tech work all the time.
