I have created a new slide master, then saved it as a new design template. But when I go to apply the design template to an existing slide (I've selected the right slide and use apply to selected slide), it ignores it. It does nothing. Please...

I have created a new slide master, then saved it as a new design template. But when I go to apply the design template to an existing slide (I've selected the right slide and use apply to selected slide), it ignores it. It does nothing. Please explain?
