Google Earth rebuilds ancient Rome
Written by Egypt News Thursday, 13 November 2008 Traveling through time and space isn't confined to
Doctor Who and cheap pulp novels, you can do it yourself via a computer - and a little help from
Google Earth
The historical destination is
ancient Rome, the year
AD320 and the emperor of the day
Julius Caesar.
You'll not find any saucy shenanigans or poor unfortunates being fed to lions (this is family-friendly, after all), but you can wander round the
Colosseum, see
Rome's parliament (the Forum) or simply swoop over the
Basilica to get an idea of its scale.
And that's not all - there are more than 6,700 buildings in the virtual city, enough to keep you hooked for weeks.
Rome is the first city to be re-created by
Google Earth, its authenticity built on the knowledge of learned academics and archaeological finds over the years.
We're already looking forward to the second project,
Hogarth's London would be nice, but we suspect
ancient Egypt is racing certainty.
