About Hotels in Egypt
Generally speaking, only 3, 4 and 5 star Egyptian hotels can be booked online. I have traveled to Egypt many times, and if there's one thing I've learned it's to
book all hotel reservations in advance, via an online Egypt hotel reservation. I once even tried to get a recommendation for a good hotel from a cab driver. I ended up paying an extra $10 per night for a not so hot room, in a less than elegant establishment - of course, the only reason he recommended it was because he had a deal with the hotel.
Egypt hotels are loosely categorized — ranging from 5-star deluxe all the way down to 1-star accommodations. Below this range, there are also various, "unclassified" hotels. These are patronized mostly by Egyptians and foreign backpackers.
Standards typically vary a bit within a given category or price range, and from room to room. And while the ratings may actually mean something at the upper end, the meaningful difference between a 1- and a 2-star room is marginal at best.

Most deluxe hotels are very modern and most are owned by chains like Movenpick, Hilton, and Sofitel. You will find
air conditioning, bars, swimming pools, restaurants, and all the other expected western and international amenities.
Still, 4- and 5-star hotels do have more character, especially those claiming the famous names from the old days of Egyptian tourism, like the the Winter Palace in Luxor, and the Old Cataract in Aswan. Remember,
all hotels in this class are air conditioned and have a pool, café, restaurant, etc., and you can book them via an online Egypt hotel reservation.
When you begin to move into the 3-star hotels, things aren't all bad.
You can even find the odd gem. But most are styled after the towers of the 70's and showing their age. And you cannot count quite as strongly upon enjoying conveniences like plumbing and air conditioning.
In the 2- and 1-star levels, you will rarely find air conditioning, though better places will supply fans; besides, the old-style buildings have balconies, high ceilings, and louvre windows, so are well designed to cope with the heat. Conversely, however,
these places can be distinctly chilly in the winter, heating being a scarce commodity.
Here's another thing to consider: Some cheaper hotels are classified as pensions. This doesn't make a lot of difference in terms of facilities, but since most are family-owned you'll enjoy a friendlier, more personalized atmosphere.
Cairo, in particular, has some wonderful pensions.
At an even lower rung of the hotel ladder you'll find the student hotels, aimed specifically at backpackers. They can be
very well equipped and run, if a bit cramped. These are most common in the more well known tourist areas, like Luxor, Aswan, Dahab, Sharm el-Sheikh, and Hurghada.
Unfortunately, with most of the least expensive hotels you cannot make an online Egypt hotel reservation. You may even have trouble trying to book by phone, since many of these hotels do not employee English speaking receptionists. The thing to do is to take your chances and just show up in the reception with your passport, and book face to face.
