hello, hope you can help here..
I reinstalled a pc for a friend of mine, reformatted and reinstalled the OS. so now it is a Dell Optiplex GX260 running XP Pro. the network card is Intel Pro/1000 and has the latest drivers updated and checks out fine in device manager.
Overall it is now working perfectly, except for this problem with internet connection.
the workstation connects fine from my home, via my ADSL wired router. e.g. I downloaded SP3 in no time at all.
my friend has a Cable broadband service in his house. this service is also fine, other PCs/Macs have used it (including my laptop) and there are no problems.
BUT for some reason, when the GX260 is connected to the cable bb service, wired directly to the cable modem, the connection is incredibly limited. e.g. google.com will load, and maybe google.com/news will load if you are lucky, but anything slightly heavier, e.g. hp.com, dell.com etc, will only load meta data and eventually time out.
I spoke with the ISP and did some live testing, they confirmed the TCP/IP settings were configured ok and the connection checked out fine from their end (as the other PCs proved anyway, as they had no problem connecting using the same cable bb modem setup).
normally I can find solutions but this one really stumps me as all components in the mix seem to have proved they are ok in other configurations, only when they are together does the problem exist!
apart from ditching either the service or the Dell, what can be done??
thanks for any help (I guess you need tech specs, let me know what you need) -K
