i have a hp 7410 aio that i occasionally have to support that will not come off hook to either send or receive a fax. i seem to remember that i previously heard a relay clicking when it took the phone line off hook and i'm not hearing that now. the...

i have a hp 7410 aio that i occasionally have to support that will not come off hook to either send or receive a fax. i seem to remember that i previously heard a relay clicking when it took the phone line off hook and i'm not hearing that now. the fax diagnostic claims the hardware is fine, but it can't detect a dial tone. (obviously it's there)

can anyone:

a) confirm that i should be hearing that relay

or

b) tell me if that relay can be replaced by someone with a fair level of technical skill and an electronics background?

i'd hate to throw away the printer, scanner and copier just because the fax isn't working.
