Chinese Taipei blanks Netherlands 5-0 to open Olympic Baseball competition
(BEIJING, August 13) -- Baseball competition kicked off on the morning of August 13 with a Chinese Taipei vs. Netherlands tilt. In a nifty 5-0 shutout, Chinese Taipei showed that it will be a force at these Olympic Games.
Chinese Taipei pitcher Chen Wei-yin went seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits along the way, and reliever Cheng Kai-yen closed the door, giving up just one hit and no runs over the final two frames.
After a scoreless first, Chinese Taipei got on the board with a Lo Kuo-hui sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lin Chih-sheng.
Both teams were quiet in the third, but in the fourth inning, Taipei struck again, scoring three runs and chasing Netherlands starter David Bergman. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles by Yeh Chun-Chang and Lin Che-Hsuan and a sacrifice fly from Chang Chien-ming that scored Yeh.
A Chang RBI single in the sixth put Chinese Taipei ahead 5-0, and that was all it needed in defeating the Dutch team.
Four different players recorded one hit each for Netherlands.
Chinese Taipei faces intercontinental rival Japan at 7:00 p.m. (UTC/GMT +8) on August 14 on the Wukesong Main Field, while Netherlands squares off against the United States at 10:30 a.m. on Field 2.
