I was repairing a Windows XP Pro SP2 desktop but half way through re-insta;llation I get the Windows XP logo main page followed by a black screen and nothing happens.
Now i cannot revert changes to go back to my original XP nor can I go any further.

I do have data/settings etc on the HDrive hence cannot do a clean install.

I also tested it on a diferent computer and still the same issue.

I have been trying several test with no success.
Even Microsoft Indian supprt team cant offer any help and after almost 2 hours on the phone with their agent I am told: '..back up your software from local shop and I call you back Monday to see if we can help...' (useless)

Has anyone got any suggestions please, I have been struggling for the last couple of days

If this cannot be fixed, can anyone suggest on the best way to go about to transfer 4 yrs of data, settings etc to a new computer/HDrive?

Windows XP Pro SP2
Desktop P4
HDD 80GB
2 GB RAM

Available software media and hardware:
Windows XP Pro, XP Pro SP2 oem, XP Pro SP2 upgrade, Vista Prem upgrade, Vista Business upgrade, Vista Ultimate oem, plus all Windows 98, 2000 etc.

New 1 TB SATA HDD
