I helped a neighbor today with a Dell desktop with Windows XP/Pro SP 3. The neighbor recently signed up with Qwest for DSL service. A number of issues appeared with the change to Qwest, but the most important, so far, is that Qwest includes the Microsoft Windows Live One Care service in its "bundle."
The One Care service is supposed to provide virus protection--this I learned after the fact. Since I was not familiar with One Care when I started working on the computer, and since I did not see any other recognizable security software, I installed the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program and used it. It found 33 problems, most of which were adware, but including one trojan.
My inclination is to uninstall the One Care service--I found the posts to this forum regarding problems with the uninstall, and I have downloaded the Microsoft "clean up" program.
However, does anyone know if uninstalling the One Care service will cause any problems with the Qwest DSL service? I am reluctant to ask Qwest, since the feedback I have received from this neighbor and other friends and acquaintances regarding the Qwest tech support is strongly negative.
So, I am hoping a contributor to this forum has successfully uninstalled One Care while retaining the Qwest DSL service. In any case, I would like to see if any one has tried this--successfully or not.
