I'm using an 5 year old stick built Windows XP, SP 2 + additional critical and important updates. In the last few months, Windows gets to the "Windows is shutting down screen" and hange there. Pressing Reset will turn machine back to operating.

Kasparsky Internet suite, Ad Aware, Spyware Blaster. Only AdAware is new. I'm pretty sure the problem started before I installed AA, but memory is falible.
