Hi all,
This is not your typical Hal.dll file is missing or corrupt. I've tried all the fixes, and am getting nowhere. This is a Windows XP Pro install.
I tried chkdsk /R in the Windows XP Recovery Console first, and while it did complete, it reported that "the disk contains one or more unrecoverable problems." I also should note that Recovery Console did not ask me to identify the windows install, nor did it ask me to enter the Administrator password.
Next, I tried bootcfg /rebuild and got "Error: failed to successfully scan disks for windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrut file system, which could prevent bootcfg from scanning.Use chkdsk to detact any errors."
I tried a fixboot, which said it ran successfully, but nothing came of it.
I tried viewing the partition in BartPE as well as attaching the disk to another working computer to simply view the files. When I did that, My Computer (Not Responding) would hang indefinitely as it tried to view the disk. I entered a command prompt to path out to it, and received: "Error performing inpage operation." Which is the same error I received in BartPE.
The install must not be completely lost, however, because if you follow Windows Setup far enough, it can see C:\WINDOWS\ on the disk. Also if you type "map" in the recovery console, you can see the partition listed.
So there is clearly a problem with the booting process, but I can't actually work with that area. It seems that, as far as the online world is concerned, most people abandon their quest at this point and declare the situation unrecoverable. Just figured I'd poll you guys.
Thanks,
