I have the old version of Java 2 Runtime Envirement SE v1.4.2.05 on my laptop and wanted to install the newer version jre-6u12-windows-i586-p. However, when I go to the Add remover programs, I get the message that my windows installer device is not working properly and I should contact my service provider.

It is pertinent to mention that i have recently upgraded to SP 3 and had started getting the message that pedexe.exe has encountered a problem and has to close now whenever I start my laptop. To answer this question I went to the net and found that i have the older version of Java and needs upgradation.
