PC= Sony PCV-RZ504 / OS= Windows XP Pro
I seem to have a corrupt BIOS on my desktop pc and for two days now I have has been unable to boot up from my PC .
What is happening is that when I turn the PC on, noises and lights indicate that it is attempting to read from all available devices but in the end, finding none, it simply loops through the process endlessly until I force a shutdown.

I am able to F8 and access the screen from where I should in theory be able to go into Safe Mode, but endless looping follows any choice I make.
I can F2 and access the BIOS set up and from there I can see that the boot up devices are 'recognised' (they are listed), but tellingly, on the right side is written:
A device enclosed in parenthesis has been disabled in the corresponding type menu.

In my case, all the listed devices are in parenthesis – therefore disabled - which is why (I assume) it can find nowhere to boot from.
I am not clear what the 'corresponding type menu' is, and even less how to enable anything.

Not knowing what happened (possible virus?) I am just trying to access my main HD to boot into safe mode and try and understand/fix what happened.
Alternatively I would settle for being able to access DVD and do a re-install and hope it somehow 'repairs' things.

The four devices being recognised as present are:
1st floppy drive (ok)
PM-WDC 2500 etc (main HD - I have two)
Pioneer DVD-RW (for some reason it doesn't 'see' my other CD-Rom drive)
IBA FE slot (I have no idea what this is)

I am trying to find a way to 'enable' any one of the above devices - preferably the DVD for an re-install, or the HD for safe mood exploration.
As far as I can tell I have:
ASUS P4SD-VL motherboard (and for which I cannot find a user manual online either from the Asus site or anywhere), American Mega Trend V2.51 Bios.
Intel Pentium 4, 3.4 GHz
Chipset Intel 865PE

So far I have tried to:
removed the battery from mobo to reset to factory settings which it did, but devices remained in parenthesis/disabled.
Swapped the order of the boot devices around hoping one would 'take' (It hasn’t)
Plugged/unplugged cables leading to devices (no change in the problem I have).

I’ve run out of ideas of what to do. Please bear in mind, I am NOT knowledgeable as regards BIOS .
Many thanks,
Bambi

I finally figured it out. go to the advanced menu, disable the j micron controller, save and exit, go back in enable the j micron controller, save and exit, then on the next re-boot it recognized the cd rom
